Guest Post & Review! Goodbye Henrietta Street by Lin Treadgold!

Guest Blog from Lin Treadgold, Author of romance novel Goodbye, Henrietta Street.

I am delighted to be invited by Sheryl Browne as a guest on her blog. Sheryl and I have something in common. We are the proud owners of Jack Russell Terriers! -  both with their own story to tell. I am sure if they could write, it would be both poignant and heartwarming. In the meantime, we have to be content with two little dogs that watch our every move and sit faithful by our sides as we write our work in progress.

Dogs can be a great comfort for those who suffer illness, but they are also very good for authors who would quite happily sit by the computer all day and write (like me!) I feel it’s important to exercise and my Dylan makes me do all the things that are good for me. He drags me out of bed and won’t settle until he has been walked. They say a walked dog is a good dog and I have to agree with that. A walked human is a healthy one too.

There is only one problem with having a Jack Russell, they love the attention and just as I am settled into editing my work in progress, along comes Dylan, ‘turboing’ around the house at the very point when my story is going well and my mind is truly locked on to an important scene in the book. No matter what I say or do, won’t make him stop until he has had his walk.

SB: Oh, I so agree, Lin. Snoops gets his football out. I kid you not. His second nickname (the first being Rambo – superstar of Recipes for Disaster) is Peckham (as in Pelé and Bekham) and he boots it like a pro – mostly straight into my shins. Needless to say, he gets my attention!

When I first joined Safkhet Publishing for my novel Goodbye, Henrietta Street, we had only acquired Dylan a few months before. I found it very hard to edit and have an unruly puppy by my side, but with patience we managed him well and within weeks he became a real fun dog. We have a routine and now my time is split between walking the dog and writing the book. When I learned how Sheryl’s dog, Snoops, had been cruelly treated, I was glad she could give him a loving home. Sheryl and I found we had a mutual interest other than writing, we could also talk dogs as well!

Goodbye, Henrietta Street will be launched on 1st July 2013 and if I can enjoy my time and success as an author as much as Sheryl is doing with her latest book Recipes for Disaster, I feel sure that between us we can take on the world and follow our aspirations well into the future. I always wanted to write a book, not necessarily to be famous, but to prove I could do it. I write because I can!

To be an author you must have determination and not worry about how long it takes to get there. Once you have decided on your goal, there should be no stopping to achieve it. I wish all new writers good luck and my advice is to write and enjoy every moment. My Dylan has lots of determination and Sheryl informs me that Snoops is the same. With our dogs beside us, I know they will never cease to inspire. All those walks clear the air and allow the writer to enjoy the writing process and stay healthy at the same time.

SB: Snoops is and endless source of inspiration and comfort, Lin. My partner is actually seriously in love with him. Not sure where this leaves me…  Thanks so much for sharing.  Snoops and I wish you the absolute best of luck with Goodbye, Henrietta Street.

An island paradise in Cornwall
The eternal nature holiday or just a passing wave on the beach?

Pippa Lambton's life has fallen apart and husband Rob is ready to give up their marriage. Three years before, their son Daniel passed away; he was the glue that held them together. Now, Pippa's left home for the beautiful Isles of Scilly, for a chance to rediscover herself. She meets handsome Norwegian nature warden, Sven Jorgensen, who teaches her about the island wildlife.

Pippa finds herself laughing again. She is aware of Rob's dilemma over his childhood adoption and their turbulent relationship, but after an awkward kiss with Sven, she is torn about how to proceed. There is much to resolve, and leaving Rob could prove a disaster. Is her affair with Sven a holiday fling? How can she walk away from Rob after losing Daniel? Should she leave her home in Yorkshire for Sven and his island paradise? Find out more in Goodbye, Henrietta Street.

Pre-publication Review!

‘Goodbye, Henrietta Street’ is a poignant romance novel based in Yorkshire and the Cornish Isles of Scilly.

The poem at the beginning of the book sets the scene for this story perfectly. Within the opening chapter, it soon becomes clear that Pippa Lambton is struggling to come to terms with the ‘worst thing that can happen to a parent’, the loss of her child, and the subsequent devastation grief can wreak on a marriage. I have to say that, as someone whose parents suffered a similar loss in very similar circumstances, I drew a breath. For obvious reasons, I immediately wondered whether Pippa’s grief would be believable. How does one cope with such a loss? Can one ever get past that kind of grief? It tore at my heartstrings a little, but I have to say, yes, Pippa was totally believable. I felt her pain.

Pippa and Rob (the lost little boy’s father) married very young, as was often the case in the seventies and eighties. Friends from their schooldays, they came together, had a child together and possibly would have stayed together, but for the fact that the child was the cement in their relationship. With little Daniel gone and Rob internalising his grief – as men sometimes do, Pippa was alone and adrift trying to deal with the loss on her own. Time passes, but it doesn’t heal the gaping wound in her heart and the distance between the couple only grows wider. Choosing to take a holiday away from Rob and her hometown in Yorkshire, Pippa goes back to the beautiful Isles of Scilly, where she has treasured memories of Daniel in happier times. Her hope is to try to come to terms with her loss, examine her life and her marriage and find a way forward.

Through interests in common, wildlife, conservation and bird-watching, she soon meets handsome Norwegian nature warden, Sven Jorgensen. Though initially hiding heartbreak of his own, Sven is kind and caring, happy and carefree. He’s also intuitive. Sensing Pippa’s deep sadness he takes her under his wing, teaching her about the island’s wildlife.

Sven is just the tonic Pippa needs and the outcome might seem inevitable, but the author weaves in backstory in regard to Sven which keeps you turning the pages. She also keeps Rob’s life back in Yorkshire – and the lives and turbulent marriage of a couple close to them – running alongside Pippa’s story, making the book a satisfyingly rounded read.

The scenery on Scilly and attention to detail vis-à-vis wildlife and conservation is beautifully done. Lin Treadgold has obviously done a tremendous amount of research.  The questions are all answered, the overriding one being can Pippa let go her guilt and her grief and find happiness, yet still hold her son’s memory intact in her heart.

Goodbye, Henrietta Street is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I have to admit, if I thought I’d find a gorgeous Viking in the shape of Sven waiting, I’d be packing my bags and hopping aboard the Scillonion ferry in a flash. Loved it.

Today I’m hosting fellow Loveahappyending Lifestyle author, Mandy Baggot ~

~ and her new romantic suspense novel, Security, brought to you by Sapphire Star Publishing!

Autumn Raine is a pop vocalist at the very top of her game. She’s a style icon, the paparazzi’s darling and everyone wants to be her friend. But when her safety is threatened, her whole life starts to unravel.

Enter Nathan Regan, an ex-elite soldier who is assigned to protect her. He’s a good man doing bad things but what drives him? Passion? Madness? Or grief? Demons from his past are threatening to consume him. Can he win the fight alone or will he have to admit he needs help?

As the threat deepens, Autumn starts to find out who she really needs in her life. Is there still room for personal assistant Janey or rapper boyfriend Rockweiler? When everyone around her is feeding her lies, how does she work out the truth? Does her record producer know more than he’s letting on? What is her mother, the British Foreign Secretary’s involvement in the situation? And can Autumn put her faith in a forty-something Jamaican woman who handles an automatic weapon as expertly as she cooks?
Eluding kidnap and trying to stay alive, can Autumn find the strength to be the person she longs to be? And can two people, poles apart, forge something strong enough to survive anything?

Note from the host: Having read and loved Security, I really can’t recommend it highly enough.  If you would like to read my review, please go here: Review ~ SECURITY
Today, Mandy and I are asking, what makes you feel safe/comfortable/secure?

Personally, I feel safe when I’m tucked up warm and cosy on my boat, and the rain drums on the roof above me. I count my blessings that I am fortunate enough to be insulated from the elements. Of course, I’d feel much more secure if Nathan would kindly tuck himself up in the berth opposite.

To be in with a chance to win an e-copy of Security, leave a comment and your email address and let me know what makes you feel secure? Could it be knowing you have that secret stash of chocolate hidden away or perhaps you have a favourite piece of music that wraps you up like a blanket! Get commenting to win! Closing date 30 April 2013.

PLUS: You can enter a Rafflecopter draw to win a £25/$40 Amazon gift certificate!

Sophie's Run Blog Tour! Meet Dan!

Come on Tour with Sophie and Dan… Dan takes you to the beer capital of Europe: Munich

Sophie’s Run Blogtour 2013

Hi! Dan Hunter here of legendary rock band Tuscq. God, it sounds bad when I say it that way. You would have thought after twenty years in the business, I would have found a way to introduce myself a little more gracefully. Anyway… there it is, and this is me.

I’m so delighted to be here on Sheryl’s fabulous blog today! Sheryl always makes me laugh. (Oh yes, I have read her books. I do go in for a bit of romcom here or there!). Anyway, I’m here as part of the LAUNCH TOUR for SOPHIE’S RUN, the second book in the Rock Star Romance Trilogy which continues the story of my romance with the amazing Sophie Penhalligan ~ even if we’re on a slight detour.

Today, I want to tell you about how I plunged myself into Munich nightlife and culture whilst on tour once. It was a memorable gig! This is how Sophie wrote it up at the time:

Alien Invasion in Munich

Tuscq’s second German show got under way to generous acclaim and high expectations. If the show itself seemed to go without unplanned interruption, things got somewhat out of control backstage at the close of the gig. Unbeknownst to the band or the venue’s management, about fifty attendees from a Star Trek convention taking place that same evening had—quite mistakenly, or so they later assured security guards—found their way to the stadium and were camped out in the dressing rooms when the band returned from the stage. Mick commented, “It was crazy. When I got to my dressing room, I was greeted by Mr. Spock who was wrestling an alien on my sofa. I fought my way to the bathroom only to find Captain Kirk trying to get friendly with Uhura.” (Excerpt from Sophie’s Turn)

Well, they certainly have some panache out there in Bavaria. While we didn’t have very much time, I did make a point of looking round the city very briefly the following day just to comprehend exactly… what had happened in our dressing room the previous night! And of course I was at a slight loose end that day, what with Sophie having been called away so abruptly. I needed some distraction or I would have worried myself silly. So here’s what I found.

First of all… the Beer Hall, the Hofbräuhaus. I mean, Munich is the beer capital of Europe, right? How could I not go? It was… interesting. The beer was great, although the Oompa music wasn’t for me. Obviously.

I had to have a Weisswurst with my beer. It’s the law, apparently, it being the ‘second breakfast’ out there. It doesn’t look terribly appetizing (sausages should be brown, right!) but it was surprisingly good.

I was drawn to the Englischer Garten (English Garden), a large park in the centre of Munich. I simply had to explore it. Nobody warned me that people would be tanning there au naturel. I was most impressed; sadly, I didn’t have time to join in.

Imposing vistas. They’re definitely very proud people down there!

It was a lightning trip ~ I don’t normally get to do any sightseeing at all ~ but I greatly enjoyed it. Maybe I can take Sophie back there one day? Meanwhile, I hope you have a great time joining us in our new adventures in Sophie’s Run. Happy reading, and thanks for visiting here today.

Pre-launch Review ~ SECURITY by Mandy Baggot

SecuritySecurity by Mandy Baggot
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Take the best of 24, Taken, and The Bodyguard and you have Security. Roll Jack Bauer, Liam Neeson and Kevin Costner into one, and you have focussed, hard-edged, ex-special forces agent, Nathan Regan. I was just blown away by Security. When my Kindle threw a wobbly, I took my iPhone to bed, that’s how much I couldn’t put it down. The characters are real, multifaceted, damaged people you absolutely root for. Even in Autumn Raine - international singing sensation at the height of her career, spoilt, pandered to and ‘adored’, we soon glimpse a vulnerability which has us on her side.

A kidnap threat has Autumn whisked away from her life of haute cuisine, of which she consumes little, and luxury living at the grandest hotels to pizza in a place she wouldn’t be seen dead in – in the company of someone she would be seen dead with. Nathan Regan charged with Autumn’s security is, on the surface, rough, rude, ruthless and angry. He’s a professional, he has a job to do and he’s going to do it to the best of his ability. He’s no time for spoilt, little rich girls throwing tantrums. Though he’s haunted by ghosts from his past, Nathan’s training has helped him develop a tough emotional armour. Even when he glimpses the fragile, caring woman underneath the superstar persona, he’s not going to let it distract him. Is he? I can’t say anymore for fear of spoilers. However, I simply have to add that the supporting characters are every bit as enticing. Tawanda is just the perfect foil between the hero and heroine. Oh, and the love scenes... Wow! Enough said. You simply have to read it. Mandy Baggot is on a winner here. Security is fabulously written. You think you know what to expect, you get a whole lot more. This is a book that is hugely satisfying and highly recommended!

Cover Reveal ~ THE RED EFFECT by Harvey Black!

Today I’m delighted to be hosting author Harvey Black!
Harvey is here to share a little about the inspiration behind his intriguing military thrillers and to reveal the cover for his latest release ‘The Red Effect’.

So, Harvey, what started you writing about such a fascinating subject?

I have wanted to write a novel since I was a teenager. Enthralled by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, E.E. Doc Smith’s Lensmen series and Edgar Rice Burroughs, I felt sure my first would be of the SF genre.

Joining the army changed all of that and my passion now is for military history.  ‘Devils with Wings’, a military thriller, based around the adventures of two young Fallschirmjäger paratroopers during the early part of World War II, is a fictionalised adventure based on the famous assault on the impregnable Belgian fortress, Eben Emael.

What do you think makes your books special?

I try to visit the locations in person. For Devils with Wings: Silk Drop, I walked the routes, up to 18 miles, in Crete, during the hottest part of the day, where my characters would have marched. Most of the descriptions in the novel, of what they can see, was written in situ.

I have just finished the first of my Cold War trilogy of novels, The Red Effect. Having spent a number of years in British Army Intelligence during the Cold War years, I have a deep insight into the undercurrents and flashpoints that occurred between the Soviet Union and the West.

Can you tell what authors inspire you?

I have number of authors I follow, ranging from Stephen Leather, Simon Scarrow, Bernard Corwall, Gerald Seymor to Ian Rankin. Since i have been writing my own novels, I have played a close interest in newer authors, such as S.J.A.Turney and Stephen England. I am currently reading 'Marias' Mules' IV.

What is your plan going forward? Do you have other books in the pipeline?

There will be ten books in the 'Devils with Wings' series, Book 4, will be published towards the end of the year. The Red Effect now finished, I will focus on Book 2, The Black Effect, where the confrontation between East and West continues.

Have you learned from your writing/publishing experience?  What will you do differently next time?

More structure to my chapters in advance, focus on my characterisation and improving my dialogue, key to keeping the story moving.

Tell us a little about lessons learnt so far?

Edit, edit, edit! Even when you have your editing done professionally, you still need to check your manuscript again and again.

Out in April – The Red Effect.

Thank you so much for sharing with us, Harvey.  I would just like to finish by saying I have read Devils with Wings (recommended by my adult son, who is an avid reader of historical) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
